Description

The session discusses how each stakeholder (journalists, researchers/academics, civil society) is working towards accountability in different ways and discusses the gaps and challenges that they have found. Participants are expected to give insights on how we can build the coalition that serves the public interest.

Journalist: Pablo Arandia will present his investigation on data center developments in Chile, Mexico, and Spain. He works with researchers and civil society organisations to raise awareness in local communities in these three countries. He will address the following questions:

  • Why is such a project important? What are the urgencies?
  • What’s his biggest challenge? What are the main gaps?
  • Who should be involved to address these gaps?

Researchers/Academics: André Ramiro will present his booklet project. He combines his expertise in law and technology to create a step-by-step guidebook for local communities to challenge AI-driven decision-making. The booklet aims to allow people to reclaim their agencies over algorithmic-based decision-making in the granting process of welfare programs.

  • Why is such a project important? What are the urgencies?
  • What’s his most significant challenge in conducting the research/project?
  • How can other people (regardless of their background) help address these challenges?

Civil Society Organizations: Amnesty International’s Accountability Lab will talk about how they have been combining journalism, reporting and research for their advocacy, campaigning and investigative work. How do we push for more “hybrid models” to work in the field of AI accountability? What works and what doesn’t work?

  • In deploying these “hybrid models”, what medium-term impact did you start to see, if any?
  • Why is such a project important? What are the urgencies?
  • What are the gaps and challenges that hinder the impact you wanted to see?
  • How can other people (regardless of their background) help address these challenges?

Collective

  • How can journalism serve the larger community beyond the readers? We welcome any ideas!
  • From this session, did it spark new ideas for integrating journalism into your work? If so, share with us!
  • If you have included journalism into your work, share with us!
  • Are there ways we (Pulitzer Center) can do things differently?
  • What needs to change in order to build such awareness and action?
