About

Michael Grotenhoff is a producer and director at Filmtank, working at the intersection of documentary filmmaking and cross-media storytelling. His projects address complex societal developments across film, immersive media, and digital formats.

He is the producer of the Grimme Award-winning documentary Total Trust, which examines systems of surveillance and control in the digital age. Through the stories of several women and their families, the film reveals how pervasive surveillance, intimidation, and self-censorship shape everyday life and personal relationships under authoritarian control.

Grotenhoff’s work moves between cinema, digital platforms, and emerging media, always with a strong interest in new narrative forms and audience engagement. He is a frequent speaker and lecturer, a member of international juries, and a Fellow of the Cultural and Creative Industries Initiative of the German Federal Government.
