Description

Open Footwear is an independent, open-source research project challenging consumerism and fashion / footwear industry.
We developed the Open Run — a high-performance running shoe designed for marathons as well as everyday wear, fully customizable and buildable by anyone. All designs are shared under Creative Commons (CC BY-SA 4.0), empowering makers to produce locally with digital tools like 3D design, additive manufacturing, and rapid prototyping.
Our mission: spread the word about this alternative — its huge potential for decentralized, sustainable production — and honestly address the real challenges of crafting your own shoes.
We collaborate with academic teams at Technical University Berlin, Design Academy Eindhoven, Estonian Academy of Arts, and a global network of makers, creators, and runners. Real proof? Runners have completed sub-3-hour marathon in Open Run shoes — performance born from community innovation.
