Description
Will a less open web make us feel more connected and alive? Will it be beautiful?
This session will begin with a short presentation on internet culture and movements, drawing on recent literature from media studies, biology, philosophy and visual arts. After the presentation, there will be a workshop with a focus on the concept of *opacity zones*, which are zones where "people can circulate and experiment freely without bringing in the Empire's information flows" (Tiqqun, 2020). The workshop will begin with a guided discussion- one-on-one, then in groups, and then in plenum. Then participants will chose between a range of activities in order to accommodate various technical skill levels, energy levels and interests, including making ASCII art, building a light-weight website with an RSS feed, joining an digital activist community, or creating a private newsletter.
Bring a laptop if you'd like to build a website. No prior experience is required.
